A Perfect Space for Mathematics Research
Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute (SLMath) Facilities
There is a wonderful video on this page that is an overview of the building that houses SLMath. One interesting thing about mathematics is that it is the least expensive science. All a mathematics research facility requires are nice offices; good and varied spaces for mathematicians to get together for lectures, seminars, and informal gatherings; a good mathematics library; and not much else—though some researchers will need access to a supercomputer. The building housing SLMath is perfect for mathematics research in my view, and it will remain so forever—remodeling the facility or building a new facility to contain a new experimental apparatus is simply unnecessary. I'd love to visit the place just to walk around and soak up its mathematical atmosphere.
One thing that I love about the building is that it contains chalkboards instead of those awful whiteboards. Doing mathematics on a whiteboard is painful. Erasing a whiteboard leaves a mess, and whiteboard pens emit a chemical that gives me a headache every time. Besides, what fun is an eraser fight if the erasers aren't covered in chalk?
